Factors to consider while choosing best disc golf discs for forehand

Discs for forehand are different from discs for backhands.

Forehand is one of the most important shots in disc golf. It’s crucial to handle this shot well, since it can save you a stroke or even win holes if done properly.

One needs to choose the right disc depending on many factors like disc weight, size, type etc. Here are some of my opinions on best grip and flight patterns while choosing forehand discs.

Weight of the Disc

Maximum weight I recommend any player is 170 gms. If you go above that, then it’s not good idea because it will be tough to control its flight path resulting in loss of distance and accuracy.

Also weights below 165 gms are not very stable in flight path resulting in loss of distance and accuracy. A disc with weight 165-170 gms is good for most players.

Sharp

You need to choose a disc that has more rim than concave (it can be flat or convex). Reason being more rim means you will have the option of lifting the nose of your disc while throwing. This option allows you to throw forehand shots like tomahawk, thumber, skip shot etc.

Also concave discs are not easy to throw because they tend to flip while doing any forehand shot.

Disc type

Distance driver: These are generally straight flying discs, but their most important feature is that they will fade down the line with distance.

Mid-range disc: These are basically 2-4mms thick discs with rim size of 4″ – 5″.

They have good glide and can handle moderate headwind quite well. Their flight path is not very predictable once they reach 100′.

Putter: All putters, whether it be wide rimmed or narrow rimmed discs should be thrown only on forehand. They have good glide and handle headwind easily. Reason being you can grip these discs comfortably any way you want with no worries of disc coming out during grip change.

Firmness of the Disc

For Forehand, softer plastic is better because harder plastics will fly flatter while throwing which can be very dangerous for your game if not handled properly.

Also the control over the disc would become very tough due to greater speed it builds up while spinning in air.

Types of Golf Discs

There are four types of discs available on the market:

  1. Putters (Also known as “Putter” or “Putter”) – their flight characteristics emulate those of a putter. Except for very large and very small putters, they have a rim that is almost as wide as that of mid-range discs.

They can be used with various grips on the disc along its entire circumference.

The advantage of such grip is that you don’t need to worry about how your middle and ring fingers will touch the broadest part of the upper surface (see figure below).

Even if you only use one type of grip throughout an entire round, it’s important to know where to place you.

Although there are no universal rules for this, it is often said that the thumb should fall under the broadest part of the rim.

  • Mid-range discs (Also known as “Mid-range”) – their flight characteristics are similar to those of a mid-range disc, which means they have less glide than putters and fly further.

They also have a wider rim than putters. The size of mid-ranges can be divided into three categories: <150mm, 150-159mm, 160-164mm).

Generally speaking, if you take charge of all kinds of fields for 600 feet or more with an average drive off the tee box then you should not choose anything smaller than 160 mm.

On the other hand, if your average drive distance is less than 300 feet, you can easily use a smaller mid-range disc.

  • Distance drivers (Also known as ” Distance” or “Drivers”) – their flight characteristics are similar to those of a distance driver.

They have the widest and thinnest rims among all four types of discs.

It is particularly important to note that they fly at very high speeds and in comparison with non-distance drivers, they require different throwing techniques and positions when they reach the point where we want them to start flying.

Since it is not easy for every player to learn such technique, if your drive distance is about 300 ft. (100m), you should choose a method like switching from an old disc with which you play well instead of choosing a distance driver.

  • Specialty discs (Also known as “Specialties” or “Distance Drivers”) – they provide significant advantages over other three types of golf discs. Although you cannot throw it as long as a driver, it does have advantages such as ease to carry from one field to another, low-impact on the body, high durability and light weight that make it popular among players with back pain / shoulder pain after playing for a long time.

In addition, there are discs marketed under the name of “glide” because they create different flight patterns.
